Hello and welcome to the 10 th occurrence of INSIDE AMG, where weve arrived at the letter J. For us, J is gonna stand for journey. Whats the perfect car for epic pilgrimages? This auto right behind me, the Mercedes-AMG G 63, and thats is about to be the ace of todays video. But before we stumble the road, were going to meet the other star of todays video, one youre already familiar with, and thats the reason why some parts of todays video are going to be in German. Hi, Felix! How are you? Im very well, thank you. How about you? Genuinely well! Unfortunately, we still need to keep our interval; these are still bizarre epoches that were living in! What have you got to show us today? Today, its all about the Mercedes-AMG G-Class. Ive devised a few cases aged reports, a few cases aged epitomes from my archive, as an opening for todays topic. Chimes great.Lets go and look at them, shall we? Tells move. Wonderful. Okay, I can see a few highlightings straight away. Not bad! So, just as I promised, Ive picked out a few things from when Mercedes-AMG first began making off-road vehicles in 1979/1980. Thats when we began adapting off-road vehicles for customers principally the interiors. You can see here what one of them looked like. I was going to say, its rather strange! It actually sees you examine twice.Yes, that was a very special customer! The figurehead of his Mercedes-Benz G-Class was an S-Class front. The pattern is actually from the W 116 S-Class. Yes, I was just about to say! You can see here that the grille is plated with 24 carat gold. For real ?! Yes, for real. Wow, okay! If you obstruct turning the sheets, youll assure some of our other revisions This auto was actually a practicality vehicle; it came from the utility vehicle sector. The next photo You can see we had Recaro accommodates in there, we had everything finished in leather. It was the beginning of the trend for practicality vehicles to have a more luxury feel. Heres another one. Here, we had a few more interior features. We had hi-fi, video, Tv, folding tray tables for the people sitting in the back. Pieces that are absolutely Okay, that ones a bit older, right? This is a bit older, yes. Now, we even had a complete hi-fi system fitted above the sunbathe visors, above the passengers heads. The TV and video was between the seats, for the rear fare section. Those were the very special customer pleases we were dealing with. Not bad, the seats. You can really tell its a Mercedes-Benz G-Class from the inside, extremely, from the shape and everything. This one has a lot of red, clearly. Parcels of skin. You certainly filled it with special contacts. Incredible. And these were one-off creations? There were a lot of one-offs. In the initial stages, we were performing traditional execution improves on existing production devices. You can see here one of the refurbishes we meant we are only positioned a V8. Ah. Which engine is this? This is the M1 17, the aluminum machine. It was available with different engine displacements, so from service standards 5 liters up to 6 liters each one, clearly, with the coinciding rendition. Of route, every automobile also came with all the technology: framework, athletics exhaust system Incredible. I had no idea that you had already worked out all of these technical ingredients at that theatre of the Mercedes-AMG G-Class growth. Yes, that was already the subject back then. We produced one-off layouts, we produced seven-seaters We built an XXL version, an extra-long version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.And in principle, all of these components have now been with us all over the world, of course for many, many years beforehand. I cant assist glancing in this direction! Of track, it obliges my motorsport-loving heart hit any faster when I experience the type of images. Did you construct Mercedes-Benz G-Classes for rallies? Yes. Ive chosen the Paris-Dakar rally as an example, since it was the best-known at the time. For this, we constructed a Mercedes-Benz 280 GE with enhanced execution. We modified the chassis and made a few other technical refinements. Amazing, genuinely incredible. I can see Jacky Ickxs name here likewise? Yes, we built a automobile for him too. Theres actually nothing we havent done! Amazing. So Mercedes-AMG even produced the Mercedes-Benz G-Class to the world of motorsports. Not bad , not bad.- Correct. Ive got to say, every time Im now with you, I learn something new. Its always a great pleasure. The gratification is all mine. Youre very welcome. So, I muster your expedition is now continuing to the birthplace of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in Graz. I wish you plenty of pleasure! Thank you very much! I say thats the sign for us to go outside and hit the road, load up the Mercedes-AMG G 63, and going to see where the Mercedes-AMG G-Class is actually obliged. So come on, “re coming with me”![ Felix] Get me home![ Mercedes-AMG G-Class] Home: Starting route guidance Alright, so we are heading home exclusively home, in such cases, conveys Graz in Austria.Thats where were going today, and thats where the Mercedes-AMG G-Class is actually made. Every Mercedes-Benz G-Class that you receive on the road comes out of one factory located in Graz, in Styria, one of the Austrian moods, and thats where were going today. Were going to the birthplace of the G, if you will. Now, you might remember that back in our four-wheel drive video, we had the chance to settled the Mercedes-AMG G 63 through its paces. We had a lot of entertaining with Marc, and before we left, he invited us to come and visit him at Graz to experience the Mercedes-Benz G-Class first-hand in its natural environment. Im going to pick up right where we left off, because Im going to meet Marc in Graz and take him up on his offer. And now “we ii”, we prepared it to Graz. What a drive it was! But now its time for me to hit the hay, and well meet again tomorrow. Alright, so after a great nights sleep, its time to punched the road again and get to the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Experience Center.Mr AMG! Mr G! Warm welcome! Thank you, expressed appreciation for! How was your trip from Stuttgart? Absolutely amazing, thanks to this. I think so too. Thanks for having me. A warm welcome in the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Experience Center, or as I call it, my living room! So, I know youre a realexpert in all the Mercedes-AMG models and especially, perhaps, in the Mercedes-AMG G 63.[ Felix] Id supposed to say, yeah. Were going to test that one today, but were also going to have a little bit more off-road experience. The last-place day we encounter was in Immendingen, so that was easy off-roading. Today we are here, the birthplace of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in Graz, looking back on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Experience Center and particularly at the G-Rock.Youre going to have the chance to discover this in one of our Mercedes-Benz G-Classes. Thats “re going to be” our playground for today! One of our playgrounds. We have four prepared for you. So today, were going to explore the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and interpret both faces: the glistening one, like your Mercedes-AMG G-Class, and then the muddied one, too! That resounds predicting.[ Marc] Weve prepared four special racetracks: “were having” two off-road areas and, of course, two on-road expanses. But first of all, I want to invite you into our G-Base, because theres something really special in there. Have you heard about the Amber Cube? – Oh yeah, I have! Makes go inside.- Obviously, I cant wait! Have a look.- Wow! Wow. I dont even know where to look first in now, but that is really something special! And actually heavy: 44.2 tons, and one of the first Mercedes-Benz G-Classes from the mannequin time 79, the year when we propelled the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. That amazing! Definitely G-worthy, that thing! And on the other side, you can see Mercedes-Benz G-Class number one from the world press event in Detroit in 2018. So this is the very first one of the current generation? Correct, number 1, and pattern time number one of the Mercedes-AMG G 63 shall remain the bush since we are launched it in Geneva at the motor show. I imply, this has also got a V8 under the hood, so thats the important thing to me. Okay, this is perfect, youre a petrol head! Accurately. So, here we can see everything. Every Mercedes-Benz G-Class purchaser has to come to Graz at least once.We now have over 1 million combinings and 37 complexions for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Theres something for every taste. Yes so every customer is really special. You view the different colorings and the stitching of the seats? Every Mercedes-Benz G-Class is handmade. Over 80 percent of each automobile is still hand-made by our colleagues at Magna. And now, you can see the G manufaktur in every emblazon. Wow theres certainly nothing that thats not possible.I mean, there are colourings Ive never seen before.[ Marc] So now they can choose from a Mercedes-Benz G 350 d, G 400 d, G 500, Mercedes-AMG G 63, but now with over a million design compoundings. So you can originate your own Mercedes-Benz G-Class! Here, you can feel the leather -really special, certainly high quality, the same luxury the customer can feel. Nice! The tone of the seats Feels formidable and gazes awesome. So, Felix, I want to show you Ah! I recognize that one. Thats Jacky Ickxs car up there.[ Marc] Yes.- We fathom that yesterday at the archives. Really? The original one? Well, a picture of it! A characterization, okay! But today, were going to drive much lower, okay? So, Felix, heres a really special model.Youre missing the chassis, but on this pose you can see both sides and both faces of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class: the unclean and muddy edition, and on the other side, the burnished version. My favorite back is the muddy and unclean version.- I kind of tend more towards the on-road side.I think it all comes down to the three words: AMG.Youre always perfectly dressed with a Mercedes-Benz G-Class, so you can park in the countryside, in the mountains, or instantly in front of the opera. Anyway: I have a special guest for you now, my colleague Florian, and hes going to give you all the technical details about the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class. And now he is! Ah, hi, hows it becoming? Im fine, and you ?[ Felix] Very well! Ive never seen it undressed like this before; this looks pretty interesting, I gotta say. Yeah, but what you see here is the backbone of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, more or less. You can see the ladder chassis, which is a part we have been using since 1979. The ladder enclose hands the car the torsion stiffness it needs and the robustness it needs for its off-road capabilities.I can already see some pretty serious stuff, I gotta say. I convey, this right here: that looks like proper off-road gear. The strut poise absorbs the forces received from the struts, which also presents much more torsion stiffness to this backbone, so to speak. As you can see here, the whole front axle has is entirely redesigned since our example time 2018, so we now have an independent axle on the figurehead with doubled wishbone geometry. Thats actually relatively revolutionary for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Yeah, it is. It was a big decision to move in that direction, but it was necessary for for a few cases rationales. The first rationalization was to to implement a new steer arrangement – so we now have electromechanical steer that returns a room better steering feeling and steering action. That was the thing that was really old-fashioned in the old copy of the car. The second reason is that you have to fulfil[ Felix] All the different regulations? Yeah, precisely. Yeah, having had the opportunity to drive the old-time Mercedes-AMG G 63 and the brand-new Mercedes-AMG G 63 back to back, I gotta say that the guide really makes a world of difference. Its so amazing how well that behemoth of a gondola administers now. Its simply mind-blowing. Yeah, perfectly. So with all aspects of the on-road behavior, we made not just one step forward, but three steps forward from the old-time to the brand-new. And we likewise managed to too computed something in terms of the off-road behavior. We didnt just stay with what we had we managed to take a step forwards. And when we started designing the the simulate year 2018, which was sometime in 2014, the main aim was to develop an off-roader that had on-road abilities and not the other way round. Yeah, it stirs ability and you can see that it actually taken together. You can recognize the proportions from various gondolas I signify, the last time I recollect watching the strut table was on the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S 4MATIC +. It searches completely different, of course; a totally different purpose here, on that front. It is really serious business looking at all those big parts. Likewise, the nature the ladder frame kind of wraps around the drive shaft – really amazing construction you guys got there! But on the rear, youve still got a A strict axle the on the back, as it was before the changes. But now there are two wishbones. Now, you can see the the anti-roll bar, which is cut off in the middle. So on the rear axle, you have the anti-roll bar exclusively on the Mercedes-AMG version. On the breast axle, the anti-roll bar is also much stiffer than in the normal Mercedes-Benz version. So you can see that the Mercedes-AMG is more for the street, more for on-road, but the DNA is the same in both versions. So youve got a little more flexibility on this side and a little more on-road stiffness on that side, but still retaining the DNA, of course. Yes, thats right. One of the special things that is in the DNA of every Mercedes-Benz G-Class are the differential locks. You have three different differential fastens on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, so on the breast and rear axle and in between on the gearbox. The centre component. So gentlemen, I think youve talked a lot about the presumption. Our INSIDE AMG devotees want to see the Mercedes-AMG G-Class is on the road, and I want to show you the forte-piano, as we we call it the three magical buttons in real world. So, gentlemen, satisfy follow me! Lets run! For all Mercedes-AMG G-Class customers who want to make their Mercedes-AMG G 63 off-road, we have a special package and version: the Mercedes-AMG G 63 with Trail package. You can see that the tires are 20 -inch all-terrain tires. Also, delightful boundaries! This is really special its a brand-new account. This is the the Schckl-proved badge. The Schckl is the place where the Mercedes-Benz G-Class learned to walk. And Felix, I want to show you: if you look about 45 km directly onward in this direction, you be understood that small mountain? Thats the Schckl.Thats it back there, the world-famous Schckl? Thats the Schckl, and thats the place where the Mercedes-Benz G-Class learned to walk. The exam line is about 5.6 kilometers, but we only test over 3.4 of it. Every Mercedes-Benz G-Class has to go up and down a total of 2,000 kilometers -that entails 330 goes up and 330 terms down. This is perfect because its all bumpy, since we are never deepen the surface, and because we have all the data for the last 40 years. Our purpose is always to improve the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, to make it better and better, because when we launched the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the aim was to build the best off-road vehicle in the world. Thats what we did, which is something we do and what we will ever do in the future. And thats the place where we ever measure and bar. The neighbourhood of inception, delightful! Its really tough on the chassis, on the whole car.But the maximum slope on the Schckl mountain is only 50%. Today you will go to 80, to 100 %. 100% incline ?! That makes 45 positions. You can do 45 magnitudes with any vehicle, but sometimes with countless autoes exclusively one time. With the Mercedes-Benz G-Class you can do it much more often! But before we start, I want to show you the piano, the three differential locks. How do they labour? Now, we have prepared four laids of rollers. These rollers are opened, so its slippery, like blizzard and ice. These rollers are fastened, so there will be traction on this set. These rollers are opened very, and these rollers are secured. So on these two, we will have traction; on the other two, we have no traction. Jump around! Florian is in the car. So when we go off-road, we always begins with the low gear, with the reduction, and we always lock the center lock. This means we have no ABS , no ESP , no electronic relief. Thats when it becomes a real car. So Florian, please come onto the rollers! When we lock in a ordinary Mercedes-Benz G-Class, we go back to 50% of the capability on the figurehead axle and 50 on the rear.Normally we have 40 and 60 in the new generation, but if you fasten the center you go back to 50 -5 0. Florian, delight! What is going to happen? Whats happening now is that we have two spinning wheels: one spinning wheel on the rear and, at the same time, one spinning wheel at the figurehead. At this place, you can give full acceleration but nothing will happen. If youre driven by the knolls, youll merely was down , not forward. Youll dig yourself in. So thats the reason why we have lock number two, the rear differential fasten. That means we get a stiff connection from both of the motors on one axle and one rotation brings us forward. You you will hear it Florian, satisfy! Because at the moment, on this tire, we have traction but no ability. When Florian pulps number two, you will hear it, and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class will be resumed. Ah, crazy! And the reason we have three differential locks in the car – I goes to show you now. Flo, delight reverse and stop! And now go back to drive, satisfy! So now we have three spinning wheels .[ Felix] That is so crazy.- We simply have normal traction on one motor in the breast. But when we look on the other side, you can see, Felix, that the breast rotation is spinning still faster than the rear one. If we lock the centre for human rights, that means 50% of the supremacy will be on the breast axle, 50% on the rear, and that symbolizes 25% each. And the reason why we have three differential fastens is so we can also lock number three. That means that all four rotations will have the same gyration all the time and confidence me, then, theres simply one road for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class to go: forward. So Florian, please press numeral three! And “youre seeing”: its fastened, the control is in, and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class will move. Like magic! The three supernatural buttons. Well now Ive got it , now Ive certainly got it. Weve got the whole day to see if youve got it! So , now I want to show you the axle change. Youve learned that we now have a single adjournment on the front. On the rear, you can see a strict axle, long softening lengths, but we never lose any of our off-road capability. So, second differential lock and the car will tip-off. Holy cow! Thats perfect. Thats the way to change tires in the wilderness. And then he comes up and down, and you identify Have a look at the strict axle, the long damping distance, and then And if youre feeling really strong Let me catch it, in case it precipitates over! – Its so easy to tip a Mercedes-Benz G-Class, huh? Felix, this wall shows the off-road capabilities of a Mercedes-Benz G-Class.These six key people are what induce us the best off-road vehicle in the world. We improve the on-road performance every time we launch a new auto, but we never make any compromise on the off-road performance. I can see that. I necessitate, this almost gazes ridiculous; you look at it and you think there is no way any gondola in the world could ever drive over that. Youll realise the same later, but on natural ground. Here, you can see maximum ground clearance is around 20, 24 centimeters. The maximum inclination is 35 severities; the previous model, it was only 29. We now have a maximum fording depth of 70 centimeters. Maximum slope 100%, 45 magnitudes thats similar to the previous simulate. And trust me, in the afternoon, youll get to feel what 100% actually entails. Its not only a number, its not 45 units outside, it feels- My stomachs already turning just thinking about it! – Perfect. And inclination of divergence, angle of approaching are similar or a little bit better than in the previous model. So we never make any compromises, because Mercedes-Benz G-Class means off-road. It is, it was and it is likely to be the best off-road vehicle in the world. Now I want to show you the side inclination. So Florian, delight! I always get asked about the real tipping point of a Mercedes-Benz G-Class.- I cant even look at it! You can go to 35 degrees, maybe a little bit more. You can play, you can do everything. The real tipping target depends on the pressure on the tires, “if youre going to” on the roof, and how quickly you approach the obstacle; this mix together. And theres no warning system, the rules are very simple. When it gets too much, the car will tip-off. Chiefly, with our purchasers, their intelligences “il be going”: Oh, thats the limit! But today, youll keep going to 35 measures. Florian , thanks very much for your foundation and your technological knowledge! – Youre welcome and, Felix, enjoy your period now at the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Experience in Graz! I will do my best! So Felix , now we are ready to rumble. Come on! Thanks for having us. So Felix, I think well start with your favorite gondola, with the Mercedes-AMG G 63. Youre going to get some individual coaching from me today, so please jump inside.- Dont have to tell me twice! Ive been waiting for this all day. Felix, you know the Mercedes-Benz S-Class with the soft close, right? Do you know what the Graz version of the soft-close is? No.[ slamming entrance] This is gonna be our tone, this is our soft-close! So please start the engine. Do you know the program? Were going to start with a handling parcours, well do a little bit of slalom, full acceleration, you are familiar with. 585 PS, 0-100 in 4.5 seconds. So Felix, go ahead! Awesome! Youve go to drive-mode before you can start! So Felix, well with start with slalom on Sport +. The way is all yours. Go, my friend! Try to maintain the same rush all the time. Right, left, so much better smoothly! No braking! Its a Mercedes-AMG, my friend, what are you doing! Its not a Merdedes-AMG GT Black Series! That wasnt me, that was the ESP! Much more smoothly, more comfortably. Try again. The slalom begins. Much closer to the cones! Smoothly! Oh, that was the first thumped. This isnt a bowling move, what are you are doing, your best friend ?! The last one. Be gentle with the car, go for it, its a Merdedes-AMG G 63! Yes! Right, and left! Closer! Go forward! Yes, that was pretty! Oh, one make, two knocks, oh no.So Felix , now I want to show you and for you to feel the acceleration of the Mercedes-AMG G 63. That conveys 4.5 seconds, full acceleration, and at the line where Im standing, you act a full damper. Okay: three, two, one and move! Go, disappear, go, extend! And now, full restraint! Perfect, well done! That was 130, 140 km/ h. Best day at work ever. Alright, whats up next? Lane changing on a dry surface. Were going to do the first run without braking, at 50 kilometres per hour. You will start to steer after the two yellow cones. Remember, please go at 50! And its not a bowling alley, okay? 50. Its thoroughly easy. I understood matters! And were doing all of this in Sport+ state. Alright, yes, perfect! Well done. Oh, that didnt feel too bad. Its still amazing how agile this gondola feels considering how tall and heavy it is. Now were going to do the same at 70 kilometers. The move is all yours, its for you, croak! Smooth steering! Go! Looks nice. And left and right and go straight, excellent! So that was 70 and it felt like the car wasnt even trying. Amazing! So Felix, “re gonna have to” do the same thing now at 85, because youre health professionals driver. You can do the same thing at 85 , no braking. Please go! The Mercedes-AMG G-Class is really safe and comfy yes, perfect! Now turn left and right yes![ Marc] Okay, all well and good. That didnt feel too bad! Did I reached a cone? Ah, I got one! Well, Marc predicted a playground where reference is invited us, and he obviously restrained his statement. So, Felix, we have the third on-road challenge, a water handicap. Go for your first round. If you lose control of private vehicles, ever press the restraint and things will be safe and smooth and easy. But please, youre up! 45 kilometres per hour. Go Now to the left Back All well and good, well done! Well done! Whats the distinctions between 45 and 52? 7 kilometers! Your best friend, youre always too fast; I think thats a number of problems with our Mercedes-AMG colleagues. Alright, this time 45. 45, counter-steering, soft and smooth with the steering wheel. Now turn right Now full restraint Yeah , not too bad for the second run! Its not similar to a Mercedes-AMG GT. No, it isnt! And now we go back to the start, ESP off, and you do the same thing at 40 kilometers.Im sure you will feel the difference. The track is all yours, be careful! Sometimes, you even get a dancing Mercedes-AMG G-Class we call it the Viennese Waltz, the prominent dance from Austria! So please. Alright, Viennese Waltz it is! 40 kilometers. Its much much more difficult than with the ESP on. Youll check what happens Fully on the damper yeah, thats totally normal, thats a free rinse very! Perfect, well done! And “re gonna have to” make the second round twice. There was literally good-for-nothing I could do to stop that automobile from spinning.[ Marc] Anyone can do it! So go for the next one.Well do it again at 40 kilometers, ESP off.[ Marc] Go for it. Lets dance! Wonderful! Thats it. So now you can see oh, thats neutral, because the car does that as a safe peculiarity. Now start driving again. Its not so easy! Were really lucky that we have all these electronic boasts like ABS and ESP. Wow, we only did three on-road workouts and Im previously a sweating mess! Theres emphatically a lot more to look forward to in part two of our epic Mercedes-Benz G-Class journey, so stay chanted for that! See you guys in the next one! Holy moly !.
